THE FIRST LADY plunged into a plethora of health and marital issues for Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), and Betty Ford (Michele Pfeiffer). Life is not perfect, even if you happen to be a First Lady.
Some of the stories are familiar, but learning the backstories that led to “historical gossip” is entertaining. I felt such empathy for each of these women. This is due to the tremendous acting chops these ladies possess. The writers gave them the words, but their superb skills allowed each intense moment to explode. Kudos especially to Gillian as she discovered the truth about her husband’s loyalty. Her reaction was so guttural, raw, and authentic. Not every actress can “go there,” but she did.
I am looking forward to watching THE FIRST LADY years in the White House. I admire these women for their strength and their flaws. THE FIRST LADY is a fascinating look at “real people” who happened to be pushed into the political limelight. I am not sure most of us would be able to cope.
