“We mustn’t be victims, but protagonists of our own stories.”
Director Steve Mcqueen pours his heart into this story of a small black-owned restaurant called Mangrove in Notting Hill, 1971. The eerie similarities of inequality due to police brutality is sadly still relevant. What separates this narrative from the ones that come before it is the hauntingly quiet moments portrayed by the all star cast as they attempt to be protagonists of their own stories.
Side note – do not go to this movie hungry. The mouthwatering food simmers off the screen to the point you can nearly taste it. 😋
