The critically acclaimed series SHOGUN lives up to every written or spoken word. It is a breathtaking epic tale of power sought between the Japanese Regent Leaders in the 17th century.  It is told from the perspective of a British pilot, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who found his perilous way amidst the feuding warlords vying for control. Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uses Blackthorne to his advantage, changing Japan’s paradigm together.Â
SHOGUN premiered in February 2024. It was written mainly in Japanese, so each episode’s dialogue must be read at lightning speed. This is difficult for the visually impaired, but the show is currently available with English voiceovers, making viewing time enjoyable. I highly recommend using the verbal help.Â
I don’t think there are enough adjectives to describe this brilliant, creative story. It is majestic in cinematography and costumes. The sets have such exquisite details, making it possible to feel immersed in the year 1600. The violence, the swordplay, the subtle romantic moments, the backstabbing, the clever dialogue, and the fantastic, brutal battles are unforgettable. SHOGUN is seared into my heart and soul.Â
Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) was outstanding. Her performance had the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability. Her journey in the story surprised me repeatedly. I couldn’t stop staring at her striking beauty, both inside and out.Â
SHOGUN has won first won every top award. It is genuinely upper-tier viewing. Don’t miss out. It is worth your time, attention, and respect for what is possible when creating high-quality television. I am looking forward to season two.Â
SHOGUN is streaming on DISNEY+.
