LORNE is a documentary exploring the incomparable Lorne Michaels, the creator and Producer extraordinaire of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and 30 ROCK. This is a rare look at the creative genius behind the success of 50 years on television. Director, Morgan Neville (WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?) was allowed total access to this elusive man over a period of several years. Did this film answer every question about his mysterious persona? Not a chance, but it was a good start into the mastermind of orchestrating a live comedy show season after season.
LORNE was filled with insightful, hilarious moments from famous comedians who got their start in those hallowed SNL halls. They all professed that LORNE is an anomaly to them as well. Not one said they knew what made LORNE tick, including one of his closest friends, Paul Simon, who has known him for decades.
LORNE is a man of consistent habits and routines, maintaining outrageous working hours that often venture into all-nighters. Anyone who is on his payroll must follow accordingly. He believes those crazy hours have the impetus to push the boundaries of what is funny and current. No one argues with his system of getting the best comedy sketches week after week.
LORNE used animation in several spots to punch up missing background information. These were clever, well-thought-out segments that added greatly to LORNE’s image. It was a fascinating discovery of enigmatic artistry and flair. He has even used the same office space since 1975, munches on tootsie rolls, and has had an aquarium front and center packed with fish since the beginning. Who knew?
Lorne Michaels knows what his legacy will be, and he has no intention of retiring anytime soon (He is 81). This is great news for SNL and fans everywhere. He is the master of keeping his show fresh, showcasing and introducing the comedians of the present and future.
