From director Fede Álvarez (DON’T BREATHE) comes an experimental thriller that’s a blend of THE TWILIGHT ZONE and a whodunnit podcast. The results surprisingly will make you laugh, scream and even cry as the audio unfolds.
Taking visual inspiration from the video game KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO, CALLS plunges the audience into a world where mysterious things are happening. The series consists of nine phone calls between ex-lovers, estranged families, airplane captains, and more as strange things universally happen in the world. Rather than show what’s occurring, CALLS is all audio with visual grids animated on the screen. This allows audiences’ imaginations to run wild with what could be happening. Was that sound a broken bone? Or just a broken tree branch? Why is she going in the house if he has a gun?!?! The answers all come together for a horrifying and emotionally satisfying conclusion.
After watching CALLS, I am hopeful that more creators take advantage of the golden age of narrative podcasts and experiment with TV. Gather your family (13+) and sit around to listen to an emotional rollercoaster that’s unlike anything you’ve heard before.
This is one of Apple TV+’s best and available now.
