CHRISTMAS ANGELS

Movies Aaron "Dobler" Goldstein

Ida Hoffman wrote and directed this short, drawing from her own life. Her mother raised her sister while working three jobs, and that lived-in history runs through every frame.

The story follows Sara (Ida Hoffman) and Bella (Una Bay Hoffman), a mother and daughter determined to keep Christmas magic alive despite being unhoused. Hoffman shoots it with a minimalist, shaky camera that lends the whole thing a naturalistic, almost documentary feel.

Hoffman and Una Bay Hoffman deliver superb, lived-in performances. Their bond doesn’t feel written; it feels witnessed. Bella’s wonder plays against Sara’s exhaustion, and neither actor oversells it.

CHRISTMAS ANGELS refuses to treat unhoused people as a plot device. Instead, it centers on hope. In just twelve minutes, it captures a mother’s fierce protection of her child’s innocence, even when the world gives her every reason to let that innocence go.

Final Thought: If love is an open door, I’d gladly welcome a feature-length version of CHRISTMAS ANGELS into my house this holiday season.
