Though it may be hard to believe, no R-rated animated movie has ever won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Only two have been nominated (ANOMALISA and MEMOIR OF A SNAIL), and this should be a lock to be the third. Movies about Alzheimer’s tend to be devastating no matter how creative the project is. But of all the films I can recall that have covered this topic, TANGLES manages to place enough interesting subplots around it to make for a more pleasant kind of cinematic experience than other movies on the subject.
This is a legitimately funny film that also happens to have a very compelling love story and world-class hand-drawn animation. I can acknowledge that this is easily a top 10 film of the year for me, and a movie that rocked me to my core so deeply that I might not have the gumption to ever see it again. Both things can be true.
