I don’t know what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised that THE VINCE STAPLES SHOW is a surreal and atmospheric slice-of-life comedy. It’s simultaneously goofy and gritty, following Vince Staples, playing a fictionalized version of himself, on misadventures in and around Long Beach.
The show is only five 20-something-minute episodes but doesn’t have an overarching plot line. The second episode, BLACK BUSINESS, stands out – if you’re looking into giving this show a shot, watch this one for its unique mix of comedy, social commentary, and absurdity.
Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised at how this show turned out; I’m a huge fan of Vince Staple’s music – his album BIG FISH THEORY is one of my favorites of all time. On the surface, his music is fun; dancey, and groovy, and his flow is unique but lyrically intense. Similarly, although structured like a comedy, THE VINCE STAPLES SHOW gets dark, and sticks with you.
I’ve loved pretty much everything Vince Staples has done, and THE VINCE STAPLES SHOW is no exception. It’s now streaming on Netflix.
