Piece by piece, LEGO VOYAGERS quietly grew on me. I had the chance to play this game with my niece over several nights this past summer, and it created laughter, puzzle frustration, collaboration, and, most importantly, a good time for everyone.
The game’s sparse world works to its advantage as players set out across minimal LEGO and puzzle landscapes to put together. You have to work closely as a team; think of it as a less stressful version of PORTAL 2. Whereas PORTAL 2 ramps its challenge up, VOYAGERS ramps it down so kids can play alongside their older family members. The dynamic suited us perfectly: my video game knowledge was put to the test while her hand-eye coordination helped us move quickly through a few of the faster-paced stages.
Where LEGO VOYAGERS goes from a 😊 to a 🤩 is in the final act. I wouldn’t dare reveal what happens, but the dialogue-free send-off is a nice one, and through its visuals it explores the value of companionship.
Final Thought: LEGO VOYAGERS is a pleasant co-op surprise that has no business being this heartwarming and fun to play. Yet, just like any LEGO set, the journey to build and play it is just as rewarding as the destination.
