THERE’S A HOLE IN MY BUCKET is a poignant, powerful documentary film. It will make audiences laugh through their tears. It is a thoughtful glimpse at grief and how to move forward after the death of someone you loved deeply. It offers an abundance of the memories someone close to you leaves behind. It does not offer advice. It just reaffirms how necessary it is for all of us to live each and every day with joy, laughter, and love for all those who surround us. It is a lesson shared by someone who knows and feels every millisecond since he’s been left behind. It is a wondrous, magical journey that so many of us can relate to every day.
Royd is a mini-celebrity, being the great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien. Yes, THE LORD OF THE RINGS himself. I can’t even imagine carrying the weight of that legacy. Royd’s older brother, Mike, died from the ravages of ALS, an insidious disease that will, in the end, destroy every shred of its victim’s dignity. There is no cure and currently not enough funding, because once you receive this diagnosis, the days are numbered. Mike, who was an adrenaline junkie, left behind a sealed bucket list for Royd to complete. Each one had to be filmed and documented, hopefully to raise awareness and donations for ALS research. This was Royd’s journey to find a way to move forward and let go of all the emotions pent up deep within his grief-shattered soul. It all couldn’t have been filmed more authentically, honestly, and bravely. I was humbled and honored to share all that was revealed. The successes, the failures, the attempts… it all adds up to peeling back the layers of who we are at our core. Bravo.
THERE’S A HOLE IN MY BUCKET has a simple premise that will linger long after the screen goes black. It reminds us of our purpose while we have one last breath. Don’t waste a single minute. Thank you for the reminder and the nudge.
