LUCKY completed its breathtaking, jaw-dropping first season. It was exciting, thrilling entertainment for audiences who claim to be thrill-seekers and addicted to the next con. I guess I fall into that category since I was mesmerized each step of the way. The credit belongs to the writers and the extraordinary caliber of acting talent. Even though the premise was really out there in left field, it all held together with bloody, violent action while tugging at dangling heartstrings for empathetic moments. It wasn’t realistic, but it was sure great fun to watch.
Anya Taylor-Joy as LUCKY was incredible as she untangled every twist and turn the bad guys could throw at her. This also includes her father, played by Timothy Olyphant. No one could stand a chance against this conning duo. And believe me, every character tried. Their exquisite timing together was amazing. At times, it was so tough to decipher truth from the numerous bullshit schemes. Annette Bening as Priscilla was magnificent as well. Her moment of sheer agony and loss tore me up inside. It was totally animalistic, haunting, and authentic. I will hear her cries in my nightmares forever. Brilliant work by all to savor, but I still say this could never happen in real life.
I must ask on a nit-picking level, who the hell selected Priscilla’s final wardrobe choice? It was ill-fitting, ugly, and did nothing but distract attention from what was emotionally going on in the scene. I sincerely hope that costume was not from Bening’s personal wardrobe. Truly awful.
LUCKY ended with a possible go at another season. Personally, I hope it doesn’t. It was as ambitious an ending as I would ever want, and I still feel satisfied.
