DEAD BOY DETECTIVES is the perfect Halloween watch – mysterious, supernatural, and whimsical.
Each episode offers a fresh take on traditional folklore, packed with fascinating world-building. Its rich lore makes it an easy, engaging watch, and its comic book roots really shine through. While the mysteries themselves aren’t particularly intricate (despite the “Detectives” title), it doesn’t really matter. The fantastical storytelling is enough to keep you hooked.
I’ll admit I was hesitant to start watching, since Netflix doesn’t have the best track record with high school dramas like this. Fortunately, DEAD BOY DETECTIVES avoids being cringey or cliché. The writing is strong, and the main cast members, especially Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), are genuinely fun and easy to fall in love with. The friendship between the two protagonists, the titular Dead Boy Detectives, is refreshing and well-developed, evoking the charm of my favorite childhood mystery novels, THE HARDY BOYS.
Some of the show’s most memorable moments come from its supporting characters, like the sassy sprite Litty (Caitlin Reilly), Jenny the Butcher (Briana Cuoco), and the sultry Cat King (Lukas Gage). While not particularly hilarious or terrifying, the series stays consistently entertaining. Its deeper themes, queer yearning, family dysfunction, and identity, are handled thoughtfully, giving the show unexpected emotional depth.
It’s a shame the series was canceled; by the final episode, I was fully invested in the characters’ arcs. Still, even unfinished, DEAD BOY DETECTIVES is worth watching; experience now on Netflix.
