What started as a raunchy, audacious, wild ride has gone out with a whimper. Outside of a few solid episodes this season, the series takes all the setup from GEN-V and THE BOYS, and does a paint-by-numbers conclusion that has zero surprises. It’s generic TV that is trying to be edgy.
Still, the main reason to watch the latest season of THE BOYS is the cast and the characters. They really stand out. For example, Karl Urban is great as Billy the “twat” Butcher, Jack Quaid brings Hughie “Billy Joel loving” Campbell to life, Antony Starr gives an award-worthy performance as Homelander, and Karen Fukuhara adds new depth to Kimiko with some twists in season five.
Unlike INVINCIBLE, which went all out with action in its latest season, THE BOYS spends more time on characters talking about their feelings in long, drawn-out scenes. I know there’s a lot to wrap up at the end of a series, but I was hoping for more dialogue, like Sage’s standout line: “I’m going to Harry Potter World in Orlando.”
Final Thought: THE BOYS first few seasons deserve to be seen by all superhero fans. However, know that the last couple of seasons, including GEN-V, don’t quite add much to the story of this once top-tier show.
The entire series is available on Prime Video.
