ITโS NOT LIKE THAT was a journey through how two families maneuver through loss, grief, and divorce. It is a soapbox story that entails buckets of tears and acting out since it involves children and teens alongside the parents.ย The emotional plot pushes audiences in every which way, since there is no single right way to mourn or move on.ย
The series is also immensely influenced by concepts, since one of the parents is a Pastor. These three labels are for the kids PK. (Preacher kid) This always seems to bring up more dilemmas, situations,ย and triggers. At times, the dialogue teeters on the edge of sappiness. Everyone is continually trying to do and say the right thing, but it all doesn’t feel normal. This is my criticism of INLT. I like my soaps raw and louder.ย
The show rests on the shoulders of Scott Foley (SCANDAL, WILL TRENT) as Pastor Malcolm and Erin Hayes (NCIS) as Lori. Foley has the innate capacity and skill to always look like his eyes are brimming with tears about to burst through the dam. This is not to say thatย Foley is not a good actor. It just got old to see the same reaction each time. Now, some viewers might love his facial expressions. I just wanted some surprises and realism.
ITโS NOT LIKE THAT was fairly low-key. It did provide a stroll through alcoholism, acting out, and shutting down. I binged the series, hoping for more since death and divorce are huge life hurdles. It did end with a cliffhanger, so it will probably be renewed. I am hopeful the writers will shake things up even more for season two.
It is streaming on Prime Video.ย
