THE LAST FIRST: WINTER K2 is an in-depth take on the perils of extreme mountain climbing. This documentary, directed by Amir Ben-Lev, (THE TILLMAN STORY) shares the horrendous details from the 2021 tragic climb from the perspective of those who participated and experienced them firsthand. The film used actual footage from the doomed, historical event that shines a huge spotlight on mistakes made and where this industry is headed. It is a tough watch because the unrelenting, force of nature’s elements always wins in the end.
The point to this tragedy is perhaps it all didn’t have to happen. This is the lesson expounded over and over. With the added commercialism to this dangerous sport, the industry is going through many changes for its future endeavors. T he film depicts the ups and downs of how one misstep has the power to influence the trajectory. There is much pure joy, sadness, regret, and inspiration sprinkled throughout. THE LAST FIRST: WINTER K2 is thoughtfully created. I learned much and gained a better understanding of those who are born to climb even in the dead of winter. It is streaming on Apple TV.
