I’m “starving” for more YELLOWJACKETS flashbacks and only mildly “hungry” for the present-day stories. The woods plot with the survivors is a mash-up of LOST mixed with a horror genre vibe. Yet, the present-day scenes have too many soap opera moments, especially when Shauna or Taissa is on the screen.
Even with that nit, I’m still a fan of this show… although not as big as my colleague, Jami. The show tries to maintain its “buzz” throughout all the plots when it could do a better job if it left a few out weekly. This works wonders for ensemble TV – the writers could easily focus on less overall character progression and laser focus on the characters that matter. We already get that present-day Taissa is a faulty narrator and Shauna is a wreck. Seeing them repeatedly make dumb mistakes is infuriating when there’s a “full-course meal” to dig into back in the woods.
Despite my frustrations, YELLOWJACKETS has me hooked. EDIBLE COMPLEX delivers in a big way, and that’s why I’m “Climbing Up the Walls” to see where this is going. And, from now on, I know not to eat while watching.
It’s available on Showtime.
