“And so it shall be” that the MCU’s Phase Four contains misfires. For the most part, Phase Four has felt like a side quest after you beat a video game. It’s good, but not as good as the main game.
That’s why I’m so f’ing delighted to review WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. It’s a bloody good time, all expertly staged by first-time director Michael Giacchino. What starts as a “Ted” talk with monsters versus hunters turns into something much more beautiful and tragic.
This short film has it all if you love BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, Universal Monster movies, and glorious black-and-white cinematography. But what keeps it grounded is the bittersweet “Jack” of all trades performance from Gael GarcÃa Bernal. Which perfectly compliments Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone. We need a spin-off with both of these characters ASAP.
“Somewhere over the rainbow,” I hope the MCU will make more content like this. “Good luck (Kevin Feige). I’ll be rotting for you.”
