I can say that, with the utmost confidence, VELMA has improved over its ten-episode run…but I can’t completely rule out a pseudo-Stockholm Syndrome induced by reviewing the show weekly. VELMA is at its best when it’s self-aware, but it’s a self-awareness it needs to earn.
THE BRAINS OF THE OPERATION was a genuinely fun and clever episode, for the most part. The season’s mystery was solved with a satisfying ending, but nine episodes of “experience never” filler didn’t make our journey easy. FAMILY (WO)MAN was a typical penultimate mystery show episode – lining up the dominoes for a final push.
I was surprised by the cohesion of VELMA’s conclusion. It’s hard to say, but maybe you can watch the finale and save yourself from the slog of the show’s beginnings. The final two episodes of VELMA are now streaming on HBO Max.
