UNITED STATES OF AL was the perfect mix of humor and drama this week. My heart was touched by Al (Adhir Kalyan) feeling homesick for his country and his family.

Normally, this sitcom goes for the punchline in every scene., but this week the actors allowed the words time to resonate. It made a huge difference and it felt like a totally new show. Comedies have to give us a reason to care enough in order to witness the authentic moments. I heard them loud and clear.

As I watched UNITED STATES OF AL, I began to realize how strange and difficult it must be to adjust to a totally new country. What would hit me the hardest was never being allowed to return to my homeland. I would be overcome with grief, yet the writers were still able to find the minuscule moments of joy and laughter.

I sincerely hope this is a new beginning for UNITED STATES OF AL.
I am excited to see where Al’s journey takes all of us next. It is available to stream on CBS ALL ACCESS Television.
