The first two episodes (MY LEAST FAVORITE YEAR and IT’S LIKE THE FLU) of THE MORNING SHOW’s second season will have audiences quickly realize the series still has a hangover from last season. I’m not entirely hating on season two, it has a lot going for it, and I expect that the whole story arc will make its appearance by episode three. But in the meantime, this show throws a lot at the audience without much revealed.
The second season opens nine months after the “Me Too” movement that shook the UBA network to its core. With Alex (Jennifer Aniston) off writing her memories in a Nancy Meyers-like furnished cabin, and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) co-hosting THE MORNING SHOW with her new anchor, Eric, played by the underutilized, Hasan Minhaj.
Yet, we all know where this is heading. Audiences will have to weed through the narrative debt from season one. Hannah, Mitch, UBA, and so much more are in the way of preventing our favorite co-hosts (Alex and Bradley) from reuniting. I’m hoping the reunion officially happens in episode three, as THE MORNING SHOW doesn’t have enough stall time to prevent this inevitable plot point from fulfillment.
THE MORNING SHOW is, at its best, a flawed imitation of an Aaron Sorkin drama. It throws current events like the impeachment trial and a novel coronavirus at audiences faster than a “walk and talk” session through THE WEST WING. But, for the most part, this area of the show works. It’s fun seeing likable characters onscreen talk about the crap we are going through in real life. What’s not fun is a meandering two episodes that should’ve been consolidated into one worthy of an 🤩.
Alex writes in her memoir, “Stay tuned for the twist.” Unfortunately, after two episodes, I’m still waiting.
