THE MONK AND THE GUN ๐Ÿ˜Š

Watching THE MONK AND THE GUN feels like taking a walk on a sunny day when you’re in a good mood. It’s very pleasant, albeit not particularly exciting. You may encounter something mildly unpleasant, like a group of rowdy teenagers or some un-picked-up dog poop, but you ignore it in favor of preserving your idyllic state of mind.

THE MONK AND THE GUN contains interweaving storylines centered around the titular monk and gun, set in Bhutan in 2006, while the country is shifting from a monarchy to democracy. When these four or five threads coalesce, we’re left satisfied, and with the understanding that a true climax would be antithetical to the point of the film.

The cinematography was stunning – the Bhutanese landscapes and villages nestled in the Himalayas are undeniably striking. Director Pawo Choyning Dorji crafts a mellow comedy that plays with comic timing like a Taika Waititi film and follows an ensemble of eccentric but loveable characters like a Wes Anderson movie but ultimately ends up being a unique Dorji piece. His emphasis on the culture and people of Bhutan and the subversion of filmgoers’ expectations elevate this film to mountainous levels.

As an American, watching the Bhutanese resistance to their newly acquired democracy feels incredibly topical. The contrast between the cities of Bhutan with the villages works well to emphasize the perspectives of the various characters. This is a rare comedy that has a lot of depth without delving too deep into “dramedy” territory.

I don’t really have any negatives, but advising you to rush to see it now seems to oppose the point and pacing of this film. But when you do see this movie, I’d be surprised if you don’t enjoy it. THE MONK AND THE GUN is now playing in theaters.
