After a surprisingly strong spin-off, GEN-V, THE BOYS returns for season four, and the three episodes somewhat soar, but not relatively as high as Homelander can fly. Speaking of Homelander, Antony Starr is the reason season four is worth watching. We all know that Homelander’s dictator-like tendencies are deliberately comparable to Donald Trump. And showrunner Eric Kripke utilizes them to shine a hilariously brilliant light, mocking America’s current political stage.
Yet, what I want more from THE BOYS is gross-out action and empathy. Gone are the days when Hughie (Jack Quaid) was soft, and Annie January (Erin Moriarty) was conflicted about Vought’s motives. For all the drama in the three-episode premiere, it all felt relatively tame by THE BOY’s standards. Outside of two fantastic sequences. One involving ice skating and some Broadway Tony award-winning singers, and the other action sequence was staged during a MRS. MAISEL-themed Bat Mitzvah.
What excites me most about THE BOYS is that it’s confirmed the show will wrap up after next season. To me, this means that the showrunners are telling their story and will not overstay their welcome. And while I miss THE BOYS witty dialogue, especially quotes like, “You ever seen WAR GAMES? What am I saying, look at you. Of course, you’ve seen fucking WAR GAMES.” I will cherish a show going out on top versus sinking to the depths of the bottom with The Deep.
The first 3 episodes of season four are available on Prime Video.
