Just when I thought THE BOYS couldn’t get any more graphic, they go there. It’s not a spoiler to say there is a lot of gratuitous sex in this week’s edition (it’s in the title). Yet, I didn’t expect how much one explicit party could move the entire universe of THE BOYS forward in monumental ways.
Before I get into the Homelander (Anthony Starr)/Soldier Boy’s (Jensen Ackles) must-see confrontation, I want to start with what doesn’t work this week. The first twenty minutes of HEROGASM is a LOT of backstory/characters talking. At times, THE BOYS feels like early Netflix. Characters explain their motives with mediocre dialogue and monologues. Yet, this usually is short-lived and jumps right into the bloody fun.
In previous seasons the slowdown was easier to overlook because we had the empathetically relatable Hughie (Jack Quaid) as our guide. However, in S3, they’ve stripped away this Billy Joel-loving character to have him also explore the season’s central theme – masculine toxicity.
And that masculine toxicity is on full display in one of the best supe battles yet of the series. Look, at this point, if you are watching THE BOYS, you are all-in for the political themes mixed with the fun violence. And HEROGASM saves the best for last with a well-earned climax that audiences have been waiting for.
There are only two episodes left in THE BOYS S3. My guess is the remaining episodes will be about what choices make a person/supe good and where they draw that line. Audiences know Starlight (Erin Moriarty)… I mean, Annie January’s line, but it’s anyone’s guess what happens with the rest of the gang as we near the home stretch on Amazon Video.
