A mediocre first half with hardly any music drags down the latest episode of HSM: THE MUSICAL SERIES. The season premiere was non-stop music and dancing from start to finish. Episode two goes back to the old style, leaving the musical numbers for the second act, which doesn’t work.
Having Nini (Oliva Rodrigo) at musical theater school away from the group is concerning since she’s the breakout star. This week still works though by providing a fun set of auditions for a few characters that had previously been “typecasted.” Also, the young all-star cast singing “Belle” from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, is enough to make any non-theater lover swoon.
HSM feels like GLEE mixed with MODERN FAMILY. That charm worked in the first season, but there needs to be something new. Here’s to episode 3 pulling in Derek Hough.🤞
It’s available to sing-along to on Disney+.
