Hacks ended their fifth season with a strong, inspiring finale that showcased the beloved, loyal, loving, snarky friendship between Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava. (Hannah Einbinder) It was a fitting conclusion, including all of the supporting cast that have guided this story forward over the years. It was like placing a huge ‘the end’ as the cameras fanned out over the impressive Vegas skyline. It felt good, satisfying, and not sad at all.
HACKS gave viewers a magnificent journey through a fabulous vacation trip in Paris. It was as if fans were following a special guided tour with Deborah pointing out the amazing culture, history, art, and fashion that make Paris so extraordinary. I took notes for my next trip. It was filled with poignant, honest, joyful moments. It was a fabulous excursion and well worth my time.
This final season of HACKS has been a roller coaster ride filled with many ups and downs, stories, and character arcs. Not all the scripts have been “must-see” TV. There have been episodes that should not have seen the light of day. Case in point was the AMAZING RACE fiasco adventure. I hope I never see another clown face scenario again, and I am not afraid of clowns. But despite some not-up-to-par episodes, HACKS has plowed ahead, reinforcing the strength and creativity of the affirmation of getting back up and doing funnier, more true-to-life schtick. Deborah’s motto of moving forward while figuring out what her legacy will be is a lesson to everyone. I was reminded how important it always is to be in charge of your own destiny. Thank you, writers, and Deborah for that memo. Message received loud and clear.
HACKS will be remembered as one of the top-tier comedy shows of all time and Jean Smart will remind Hollywood that talent is not bound by age. Funny is funny no matter what year you’ve were born. Smart will not be forgotten. I can’t think of a better way “to go” when your time is up.
