I was hesitant to watch the show GETTING CURIOUS WITH JONATHAN VAN NESS. I was wrong. It was entertaining, funny, and educational. Jonathan was a wonderful host who led the viewers on an eclectic, fact-gathering, emotional journey.
JVN (Jonathan Van Ness) is a member of the successful NETFLIX show, QUEER EYE. He is the hair and makeup do-over guy. But Jonathan is also very curious about all sorts of subjects. Specifically, he has questions about six different topics of interest. They include: bugs and insects (there is a difference), hair fashions and trends through history and today, what it means to be binary, snack food gorging, figure skating, and the world of building skyscrapers. In each segment, Jonathan enlisted the help of top experts to answer his many questions. There were visits and tours to places that added additional layers of interesting facts. If I were still teaching, I would use portions from several shows to add to my lesson planning.
What I loved about GETTING CURIOUS WITH JONATHAN VAN NESS was how positive and accepting he is of everyone. He sees the beauty in people and isn’t afraid to compliment total strangers. He can be silly, enchanting, funny, and often, over-the-top. Yet, his questions were thoughtful and provoking. He made me think, mull, and accept new ideas and concepts. JVN knew instinctively when to be still and just listen. This gave me the necessary time to take in all that I was learning. He believes in the mantra, “You be you!” There are many moments I wished our current society felt the same.
GETTING CURIOUS WITH JONATHAN VAN NESS might not be everyone’s cup of tea. JVN’s love of wearing dresses, skirts, and heels might push some people away. What a shame. You would be missing out on something special without ever realizing your loss.
It is available to stream on NETFLIX.
