I should’ve known that Producer/Director, Akiva Schaffer (PALM SPRINGS, HOT ROD, POPSTAR: NEVER STOP POPPING), could reboot a beloved 90s Disney cartoon and turn it into something much more worthy of your time than the “stinky cheese” of SPACE JAM 2. This isn’t to say that CHIP ‘N DALE is a masterpiece, but with charm and an abundance of easter eggs, it’s much better than it needed to be.
And let’s dive into those easter eggs for a quick minute. If a spoof comedy (NAKED GUN or AIRPLANE) has a joke per minute, CHIP ‘N DALE averages the same, but in easter eggs. We are talking about shout-outs to DARKWING DARK, UGLY SONIC, DUCKTALES, JESSICA RABBIT, etc. At times, it can be distracting from the story, but for the most part, it works.
Inspired by Mike’s BEL-AIR review:
Sometimes some reboots /
Go slipping through the cracks
But Akiva Schaffer /
Is picking up the slack.
There’s no easter egg too big, no pog too small /
When you need a family-friendly flick just call /
