A FAMILY AFFAIR was really a disappointing film. The ensemble was stellar, but the storyline was old, used, and tiresome. It would take more than the featured ocean montage of coupling to breathe life into this same-old rom-com.
My question is how can a movie boast a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Joey King, Zac Efron, and Kathy Bates wind up in A FAMILY AFFAIR? This is a power cast that deserved precious dialogues that would tug at the audience’s heartstrings. No amount of walking through cereal aisles will cut it. Every moment stayed predictable and at times, very whiney. It was hard to feel empathy for anyone. More backstories would have helped collide their past issues while watching their present moments on screen. In the end, I felt like why should I care about any of them? They were all too spoiled and too rich.Â
A FAMILY AFFAIR needs to stay hidden deep within the family boundaries. Some stories are fun to retell and revisit. This is not one of them. It is streaming on Netflix.
