80 FOR BRADY is a sweet movie that most people of a certain age will appreciate. At its core, it is about female friendship, and as a bonus, it shares the world of professional football with hunky Tom Brady at the helm.
Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field star in this film. Who can resist such an inspiring, amazing, talented cast? Every scene is filled with humor, angst, and sheer entertainment. Their zany, crazy antics could bring any audience to their knees with laughter, but what I loved the most was their zest for life and tenacity when all odds were against them. Underneath the giggles were real problems and fears about aging and health. They knew what each other brought to the table. They understood their limitations, and yet when the chips were down, these ladies were always there for each other. Who could ask for anything else?
80 FOR BRADY is loosely based on a true story. Four best friends who became huge Tom Brady fans. They followed him all the way to the Super Bowl game in 2017 when they were all 80+ years except for one who insisted she was only 75 and wore a jersey to prove it. The film is about their adventure and who they met along the way. I doubt if every moment was true, but who really cares? The movie is pure escapism and meant to put a smile on your face. This was successfully accomplished.
I went to see 80 FOR BRADY with two dear senior friends. The three of us thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Was it realistic? Heck no. Was it, at times, over-the-top? Of course. But we didn’t care. It was fun, light, and lifted our day. It won’t cure cancer, solve homelessness, or make the world less violent, but it was enough for those precious seconds we spent together. Sometimes this is all we can do. Be with friends and enjoy the little moments. I know these four actresses can act and do far more. But I am saying this again. It was enough for a Wednesday afternoon to just chuckle and be with friends.
80 FOR BRADY gave me new insight about bubble heads, strap-ons, and wigs. Sometimes “fate puts you exactly where you are meant to be, “with the people you do it with.” After all is said and done, “it is only a game.” Enjoy the ride.
80 FOR BRADY is available in theaters. Take a friend.
