WICKED LITTLE LETTERS was a wicked guilty pleasure featuring the incomparable Olivia Colman as Edith, an uppity, conservative spinster. Her acting talents were matched by Jessie Buckley as Rose. These two actresses brought a semi-true tale to life with hilarious and shocking results.
Long before social media, writing letters was the only way to communicate thoughts and feelings. Everyone must remember that what is printed has staying power forever, or in this case until the letters are burned. Our choice of phrases, expletives, and exclamatory remarks matters, especially if they are mostly words women and men would never utter in public. Be prepared. This is all I can say without spoiling the fu***** romp of outrageous, giggling visions. I could not stop laughing while being aware of women’s rights and freedoms overlooked in Littlehampton, England, around 1915.
I can’t overstate the chemistry and camaraderie between all the quirky characters in this movie. This is the charm of it all. And I salute the woman police officer, Anjana Vasan, for doing her due diligence. Sometimes, it just takes a village to get it right, and as an added note, “nice girls do play the guitar.”
WICKED LITTLE LETTERS is a fun treat with serious overtones. Even though the language might shock audiences, it is thoroughly entertaining and pure escapism.
It is streaming on Netflix.
