Just when you think WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS couldn’t get any better, it drops an episode like THE WELLNESS CENTER on you. Although Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) had one of his best scenes so far in this episode, Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) is the star of this week’s installment.
This episode has it all.
First, there is a genuine emotional core in Nandor’s existential crisis over his vampiric immortality. We’ve known a bit about the vampires’ pre-Staten Island existence, but it’s usually expressed with pride. This is probably the first time we’re seeing an immortal being’s mid-life crisis (maybe the TWILIGHT SAGA had some), and although it’s admittedly amusing, it’s also a bit sad.
Second, the story of this episode is great. Cults have always been so intriguing to me, and although the idea of a fitness cult isn’t exactly new, a vampiric fitness cult is. There’s also so much world-building in this episode, both through Nandor’s backstory and with the wellness center.
Finally, best of all, we dive deeper into Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) and Nandor’s relationship. Guillermo’s gone from familiar to bodyguard, and I’m looking forward to seeing what his next title may be.
All in all, his episode had its funny moments, but it was a bit more serious than what I’ve come to expect, and I’m eagerly waiting to see where this story arc goes.
The new WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS episode is available to stream on FX on Hulu.
