UNPRISONED S1 SEASON REVIEW 🤩

UNPRISONED is a fast-paced, witty series that deals with a family history filled with unresolved issues of pain, abandonment, and the virtues of therapy. Eight episodes that move viewers quickly through what would normally take most people a lifetime to understand, recover, and move forward.

Paige (Kerry Washington) is a sharp, “tells it like it is” therapist. Her traumatic childhood left some pretty deep scars. Add into the mix her father, Alexander (Delroy Lindo Edwin), who has been in and out of prison most of Paige’s life, and her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakatohavana), and life inside her home is complicated, to say the least. Brenda Strong plays Nadine, the ex and current girlfriend, with a “take no prisoner’s attitude.” It is a strong ensemble that allows viewers to feel a ton of empathy.

The writers have added an extra boost in each installment. Paige can conjure up her childhood version of herself to bounce off her thoughts and fears. I think everyone should have a “mini-me” sitting on the couch. This would make everyday life a blast. The writers also bring up heavy, humorous dialogues about trust and love. The question is always, “Who do you want to be?” Whew…I feel like I have been engaged in therapy. I gotta get off the couch.

UNPRISONED is messy, but it shares real-life situations that lead to being right-side up and okay again. It is entertaining and heartwarming. It gives one hope that families can survive when given second chances. It ended with a cliffhanger. I am betting there will be another season coming. Kerry Washington is worth the time invested.

UNPRISONED is available to stream on HULU.
