THE WHITE LOTUS is such a tease. For the second season now, coming into our living room with all these beautiful people in their beautiful places dropping little crumbs of mystery and romance… Enough to keep us coming back each week because we’re addicted to this dark & dreamy soap opera satire.

My father was Sicilian. His father was from Palermo. And while I never met my grandfather (he passed before I was born), I’ve always wanted to travel to Sicily and trace my family roots. This is basically where my connection to the Di Grasso family ends. In the fifteen years since THE SOPRANOS ended (sorry for making you feel old), I didn’t realize how much I missed Michael Imperioli on my tv screen each week oozing that smarmy Italian charm. Is Dominic the key to our season-long enigma? It’s probably not dad Bert (F. Murray Abraham) or nerdy son Albie. I’ll have to assume Albie’s mom is NOT Italian because that name has northern European written all over it. Although I guess it could be short for Alberto. On to our next round of “candidates”.

Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and her friends are intriguing but in a very different way. I can’t help but feel there’s some attraction between her and rich tech-bro Cameron. Maybe it’s just that she is seemingly smart, successful, and confident, while Cameron is also rich & pretty, but needs constant validation. It’s an opposites attract sort of thing… I wish Cameron didn’t remind me so much of season one’s Shane (Jake Lacy) unless that’s the point. What’s a vacation to an exclusive resort without at least one spoiled brat?

Lucia & Mia might not have the money that the other guests have, but they seem to know their place in society more than anyone else so far. Two young women with big dreams, but seemingly relegated to never leave the island. Their carefree ways of making some cash while having fun drop them into my victim zone, unfortunately. Maybe that’s just a red herring, but as we learned in S1, the guests at THE WHITE LOTUS often find themselves in a very different place than the locals or staff.

Last, and maybe most importantly, is Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge). Oh Tanya, what are you doing?! Tanya, Tanya, Tanya… We rooted for you in S1. We saw you could be a shallow clueless white lady, but you seemed to be learning. I guess that’s the thing with so many affluent folks. They don’t need to learn. I hope Portia is at least getting paid very very well.

If Tanya was the VIP of S1, that person hasn’t yet revealed themselves in S2. I’m personally rooting for Harper right now, but she has a long way to go. Maybe our Italian sex workers have the right plan… Have a few drinks, soak up the sun, put it all on someone else’s credit card, and enjoy the trip.

Go on vacation with THE WHITE LOTUS Sunday nights on HBOMax.
