THE SUBSTANCE is going to be a classic. In twenty years, people will call it one of the best body horror films of all time and wish they could’ve been in the theater on opening night to experience the ending in real-time.Â
The film doesn’t just use gore as a reaction factor but truly enhances the plot and guides the movie’s motifs. Demi Moore, as Elisabeth, gives a fantastic performance, and we cannot help but love and pity her. Margot Qualley channels Sue flawlessly and has such a twisted character persona. Dennis Quaid is absolutely disgusting in the most complementary way and plays his role a little too well. There are so many beautiful and gross SFX that will make your stomach twist and turn while still asking for more. There’s not a dull moment in the whole film, and once the climax starts, you’re on an uphill journey of craziness that doesn’t let up.
THE SUBSTANCE has such beautiful commentary on how Hollywood eats and spits out women in a never-ending cycle to find the new shiny star. It holds a mirror up to ourselves to view the way we, as an audience, discuss women as they age and the harmful behavior that we also contribute to the process.
THE SUBSTANCE is still in theaters, and I highly recommend seeing it with as many people as possible to fully experience it.
