I only watched the finale of THE IDOL, and while it was definitely bad, it was admittedly fun to watch. There didn’t seem to be any resolution, there’s a half-baked twist, but the songs kinda go off. I was a fan of Lady Gaga’s “Why do you look so good in those jeans?” song from A STAR IS BORN, and THE IDOL’s soundtrack is even better than that.
If you think you may like THE IDOL, you probably will. Whether or not you’re a fan of The Weeknd, don’t worry – he’s so grimy in this show it almost feels insulting. This last episode felt like a high school film project about the music industry, complete with nonsensical plot points and contrived, superficial perspectives- there’s a scene where three characters are literally wrapping up and summarizing the show, cackling like 60s cartoon villains on how they’ve ruined someone’s life. Goofy.
Overall, Lily-Rose Depp was great, and the highlight of The Weeknd’s acting career is still UNCUT GEMS. THE IDOL is available to stream on Max.
