THE DIPLOMAT picked up season two seconds after last year’s explosive finale. It was a heart-pounding, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants moment. It felt as if viewers were in the room where it happened. The following whirlwind episodes never let up the cat-and-mouse intrigue that ensued. All I have to say is bravo for an even better story, more action, and featuring compelling, entertaining characters. I could not stop watching.
Keri Russell is flat-out amazing in her portrayal of Ambassador Kate. Her facial expressions can hold an audience deep within her palatable pauses and breaths. She presents an authentic, flawed, thoughtful, raw woman who reacts to the stumbling political world around her. Add in her bold husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), and international turmoil skyrockets. He brings a potent quietness into their conversations. Their relationship flips from hate to love within the blink of an eye, as demonstrated by raging dialogues and extreme physicality. Viewers never know what is coming next, and that’s the fun of it all. Angry, sarcastic, lovey one-liners are continuously being hurled from all angles during any situation. They are a match made in heaven and hell, and it all plays out spectacularly.
The entire ensemble is fabulous and makes their spy world believable. It includes David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and the incredible Allison Janney. The locations and sets encourage everyone to visit England and Scotland. The banter is fast, the twists and turns are numerous, and the many surprise cliffhangers are WTF moments.
THE DIPLOMAT is in a class all its own and definitely a must-see TV show, but it comes with a warning… once you start, you won’t be able to stop. It’s more addictive than popcorn or potato chips. I would bet you won’t be able to watch this series slowly and methodically, but who dares? I say enjoy fine TV viewing whenever it is offered.
THE DIPLOMAT is streaming on Netflix.Â
