SUNNY S1 REVIEW 😊

Esta and Aaron have a somewhat “sunny” day reviewing the first season of this robotic exploration of grief.

E1-E2 😊

“SUNNY’s premiere episodes are solid science fiction with more style than substance. It also has a sarcastically bitter performance from the underutilized Rashida Jones (why isn’t she a lead in more TV series?).”

– Aaron

E3 MMMM, HINOKI 😊

“SUNNY is just getting warmed up. The plot is gritty and seems to rest in the underbelly of Japanese society. I  fear there will be several strange journeys yet to come. Violence and evil seem to be following and watching Sunny at every turn. I am in. Just let me change my shoes so I appear “normal.”

– Esta

E4 STICKY 😊

“SUNNY is moving along at a robot crawl pace. Outside of an exciting EASTERN PROMISES-light bathhouse scene, there’s little to report this week.”

– Aaron

E5 JOEY SAKAMOTO 😊

“SUNNY is not an easy, relaxing watch. It is beyond quirky and does not reveal a great amount of info in each week’s episodes. JOEY SAKAMOTO is no different than the others except viewers now have a mini-cliffhanger. There are moments I am not sure I care enough about the outcome, but it does pique my curiosity. I do want to know what the heck happened, and so I won’t let it go.”

– Esta

E6 KOYOTO MANJU, SO DELICIOUS 😊

“At this stage, it’s clear that SUNNY is not the best show on TV. It’s an intriguing premise that needs more than its Japanese setting, an exciting robot, and a powerhouse performance by Rashida Jones.”

– Aaron

E7 THERE’S BEEN A SHIFT 😊

“Rashida Jones, as Suzie, is having difficulty coming to terms with where she is in her life. Being around her is very tense. She is demanding in her grief. If I were Mixxy (Annie the Clumsy), I would cinch that waist and not rock the boat. This week, the pace was faster, and at times, even more humor was shared, especially while banging on hotel doors.”

– Esta

E8 TRASH OR NOT TRASH 🤩

“I’ve seen the entire first season of SUNNY, and E8 is easily the best. A forewarning to fans: this is the high part, so enjoy it before the inevitable slide back to mediocrity in the next two episodes.”

– Aaron

E9 WHO’S IN THE BOX? 🤩

“SUNNY took viewers on a wild, introspective game show journey. It was over-the-top, bright, colorful entertainment.”

E10 THE DARK MANUAL 😊

After an atrocious penultimate episode, SUNNY follows its “dark manual” to return to mediocre form. As it sets up one nice twist to carry over for a possible season two, I’m still asking myself why this show exists. I then remember that it was to display Rashida Jones’s brilliance and travel through Japan’s lush locations. Yet, outside of that, the story feels like an AI sometimes wrote it.
