SKELETON CREW brings magic, whimsy, wonder, and, of course, pirates back to the STAR WARS universe in a way that we haven’t seen since the animated series. My only gripe, so far, is that there isn’t more to dive into – after speeding through the first two episodes, I already can’t wait until next week.
I can’t review any STAR WARS without mentioning my particular affliction – my Disney+ curse; I haven’t been able to finish AHSOKA, THE ACOLYTE, OBI-WAN, or even ANDOR. I do, however, love the animated shows (THE BAD BATCH, THE CLONE WARS, and REBELS). The common thread that those share with SKELETON CREW? Kids!
STAR WARS, at its core, balances alien silliness with epic lore. Some installments drift one way or the other, but the best STAR WARS stories tend to tell a compelling story while acknowledging the inherent goofiness of the galaxy. Outside of the original trilogy, which doesn’t have any children in it (as far as I remember), kids are the best part of all the Lucasfilm follow-ups. From Grogu to Ahsoka to Ezra Bridger to young Anakin, it’s fun to have a coming of age story set in a galaxy far, far, away.
I’m excited to see where SKELETON CREW heads – it seems to have all the perfect ingredients to blast off to hyperspace. All five major characters introduced so far, Wim, Neel, KB, Fern, and SM-33 are likable, relatively complex, and have a wonderful group dynamic.
SKELETON CREW is now streaming on Disney+.
