NOT OKAY is just okay. Zoey Deutch plays a wannabe influencer who fakes a trip to Paris and ends up in a tangled web of lies. Unfortunately, it plays out like a Disney Channel plot mixed with an episode of BLACK MIRROR, a weird genre blend of comedy and drama that doesn’t seem confident in what it is.
If the plot of the movie interests you, watch INGRID GOES WEST for a dark influencer storyline or SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE, a TV show about a recovering alcoholic trying to better herself. If you’ve seen both of those, consider watching NOT OKAY; it’s funny enough, has a fun soundtrack, and Deutch shines in her role. The other highlight is Dylan O’Brien of MAZE RUNNER fame, who plays a constantly vaping fboy.
I should say – I have an aversion to plots that are “what if phones, but too much.” Social media as a villain is a trope that is incredibly played out, and I can’t wait for more creative ideas that reflect a realistic relationship with technology.
