MY BRILLIANT CAREER takes place in Australia in 1900. The series is based upon the books written by Miles Franklin. The story is intended to encourage and inspire women of all ages to think for themselves and not to choose to be dependent on a man for survival. This was considered pretty far out there due to the time period. This does not mean it is wrong to fall in love, but rather, marriage does not have to be a logical choice for all women.
Sybylla (Philippa Northeast) holds MY BRILLIANT CAREER together in every scene. She portrays a high-spirited woman who has a definite passion for who she wants to become along with expressing her gutsy nature. She is entertaining and hilarious to watch as she shakes up society norms. Her facial expressions and physical movements are executed with wild abandonment. Her love affair with life and adventure is intoxicating. She is the glue that holds this series tightly woven together. Her monologues and banter were succinct, humorous, and daring.
The supporting cast of suitors, family, and friends is delightful as well. Viewers will really get a sense of what life must have been like over a hundred years ago. The stunning Australian landscape will also knock the audience’s socks off. The vast countryside was indeed mesmerizing. It was a miracle everyone didn’t develop asthma from all the dust-coated land.
MY BRILLIANT CAREER was fun and enjoyable because what you might think would happen, inevitably never did. I love being surprised when watching a series about a subject we have all seen or read before. It is well-done and worthy of your time.
MY BRILLIANT CAREER is streaming on Netflix.
