I am a fierce, loyal fan of the original LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series that ran from 1974 to 1983 and starred Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert. I was reticent to watch this new perspective on a much-loved story, but I had to give it a chance since it began with the earlier years and the origins of the entire saga. I have to admit these new characters grew on me as I binged each episode. It was a slow burn to becoming in sync with fresh, different faces. Despite my hesitancy, I enjoyed their take on discovering how much the Ingalls family and their community of friends loved the prairie and homesteading life.
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE is grittier and geared for an older audience. It is definitely going to share the hardships early settlers had to endure just to survive. The current story arcs deal with the uncertainty of everyday elements beyond our control. Famine, death, harsh weather, fires, and loneliness are explored, yet with the gentle, kind, and very hopeful patriarch of the family, Charles Ingalls, played by Luke Bracey. He produced a soft, wise touch when necessary. He had big shoes to fill without besmirching the immortal memory of the legendary Landon. He was successful in his interpretation, and the series has already been renewed for another season.
Alice Halsey, as Laura, also had a huge responsibility to live up to since she would inevitably be compared to Gilbert. I found Halsey’s acting skills to be genuine, caring, and inquisitive while showcasing her discovery of a new land and lifestyle. She was surrounded by a strong supporting ensemble that made the town of Independence come alive. It was fun to see a former cast member have a quick moment on screen. I won’t spoil it, but do know it was extremely brief and during a lost sequence for Laura and her sister, Mary. This is all I will divulge.
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE was entertaining, nostalgic, and very sweet. It will make viewers stand up and applaud the bravery and strength of our early settlers. It made me realize I could never have lived in that century. It encouraged me to appreciate a simpler life and to surround myself with loved ones for as long as I can. I think this new version achieved its goals and will inspire a whole new generation of ardent fans.
