KIM’S CONVENIENCE is a quirky, comedy about a Korean/Canadian family who own a 24/7 neighborhood store. It has been one of my favorite shows since first making its debut, and is definitely an acquired taste that has grown stronger with each season.
Mr. Kim or Appa played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is the stubborn, irascible patriarch. Jean Yoon (Umma) keeps her husband in line with her heart and common sense. They have two grown children (Andrea Bang/Janet and Simu Liu/Jung) who add a myriad of modern plot lines into the mix.
What makes KIM’S CONVENIENCE so compelling and enjoyable to watch is the authenticity of their story telling. Each 30 minute episode brings humor and honesty into our homes. We meet people from this community, but really it could be from any vicinity. The writers and the ensemble know the strengths and flaws of their characters.
KIM’S CONVENIENCE is not being renewed. I will miss these lovely people. They were a part of my life for several years. The production ended where they thought was a good place. Not everything is perfect or resolved. You can feel change in all their lives just around the corner especially with the final lines spoken by Mr. Kim, “OK, see you!” He had tears in his eyes. So did I.
KIM’s CONVENIENCE is available to stream on Netflix.
