HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL. is a humorous, satirical look at the hypocrisy of the evangelical world. It is not for the religious faint-of-heart. The film is blunt and holds nothing back.
The two leading characters are the strength of this production. Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterlingย K. Brown),ย and First Lady (Regina Hall), are a force to be reckoned with throughout every scene. They work together well and are in total sync. It is impressive to watch them riff off each other, finding the best reactions with the biggest emotional impact. It is as if they are improvising a theatre game (make another choice), continually taking their lines up a notch whenever they say they speak. The facial expressions, silent breaths, and pacing create the magic on screen. Watching both actors stretch in ways viewers have not seen before is fun. And did I mention Sterlingโs strip-down for his baptism? Holy cow, that man has a body to die for (Or at the least, be reborn)!ย
I never knew โGod doesnโt like ugly,โ nor how powerful mime make-up and honking could be. I got excited with all the jazz hands and โshowtime.โ The writers probably couldnโt stop laughing at the schtick they included.
HONK FOR JESUS. SAVE YOUR SOUL. is done in a documentary style with interviews and clips. At times this becomes a little uneven. The actors are its saving grace. Organized religion does not have a chance with this ensemble.
It is available to stream on PEACOCK.ย
