HACKS is all about the comedy world and the comedians who create the words to make us laugh. On one side we have an aging Vegas legend Deborah Vance, Jean Smart, going toe-to-toe with Generation X comedy writer Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder. The results are fabulous.
The repartee is quick, honest, and holds nothing back. The Vegas lifestyle is peeled to expose a
cut-throat world of entertainment. Jean Smart plays Deborah fast, furious, caustic and a true imitation of the iconic Joan Rivers. She lives a life of opulence and luxury, yet still scrapping for every gig. Our eyes are glued to her. We never know what outrageous comments will come out of her mouth next. It is mesmerizing and hilarious.
It is fascinating watching two women playing against each other, yet both trying to be relevant in this new age. Ava is learning to hold her own against Deborah’s established world. This is tough for any 25-year-old adult and the fireworks of self-pity vs ultimate confidence are priceless.
HBO MAX is releasing two episodes each Thursday of HACKS. There are six more yet to come. I can’t wait!
