AVENUE 5 was a crazy, fresh, silly “Sci-Fi” sitcom last season. The premise was absurd and funny. Perhaps the show should not have returned. Unfortunately, the writers are taking the situation too far into space, and there is no turning back.
The ensemble is a strong group of actors, including Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Suzy Nakamura, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. The problem is the plot. I realize AVENUE 5 is based on “stupid humor,” but it still should ring a smidge plausible to have me get on board. The timing seems off as well. It’s as if the actors are pausing for laughs, which slows the momentum of the punch line. In any case, I wind up not laughing at all. It feels like everyone is trying too hard.
I know the season has just begun, and it might improve over the next few installments. I am willing to give it that opportunity. I will have to lower my standards.
