PRACTICAL MAGIC 🤩

Night 9 of 13 Nights of Halloween

Do you like scary movies?

It’s time to “be afraid, be very afraid,” as SpoilerFreeReviews is dropping 13 spooky movies for fans to enjoy this PSL season. We will post our most frightful Halloween favorites over the next 13 spooky nights. So join us around the fire as we tell our 13 creepy Halloween favorites.

PRACTICAL MAGIC is a classic cult Halloween movie in every sense. The film is based on Alice Hoffman’s book, released in 1998. This film has always been one of my faves because it includes witches, spells, incantations, curses, flying off roofs with umbrellas on Halloween, and love. The ensemble includes stars such as Sandra Bullock, Nichole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, and Goran Visnjic. Wow… what a dream team.

PRACTICAL MAGIC begs its viewers to suspend disbelief. It takes you back centuries ago when a curse was created against lasting true love among the Owen family. Dying from a broken heart was not unusual for those left behind. The Owen sisters, Sally and Jillian, seek different paths to romance. But, in the end, no matter how far apart they are logistically, they will always have each other’s backs whenever necessary, even if it means a bit of poison or a reversal of death in time of need.

This film showcases friendship, trust, and a thorough “broom sweeping” among the women in the town. Forming a “coven” is not meant to be scary. Rather, it is a bond of honesty and who you are at your core. I loved how the people grew to accept and admire everyone’s differences. It is a “feel-good” movie in the end after the obligatory blood, gore, and frogs. Since I am not a horror fan, it helped that PRACTICAL MAGIC did not overdo it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the “practical” tips for life… circle around a yellow moon means trouble is coming, wearing a ripped rope around your neck will protect you, always throw salt over your left shoulder, keep lavender for luck, plant rosemary by a gate, use the “phone tree” when necessary, have ice cream for breakfast, dance, and drink margaritas with “limes in the coconut” whenever possible.

PRACTICAL MAGIC is a fun, authentic look at your family with all its flaws. It helps you believe that finding a green, blue-eyed man who loves making pancakes is possible. When I  first saw this film, I believed anything could happen in life. I told my children to “fall in love whenever you can.” “Magic isn’t just spells and potions.” It is everywhere, all around us. I like to think they grew up believing.
