WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014) 🤩

Night 1 of 13 Nights of Halloween

Do you like scary movies?

It’s time to “be afraid, be very afraid” as SpoilerFreeReviews is dropping 13 spooky movies for fans to enjoy this PSL season. We will be posting our most frightful Halloween favorites over the next 13 spooky nights. So come join us around the fire as we tell our 13 creepy Halloween favorites. 🎃

Before the 2019 TV show, there was WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, one of the most unique and funny movies I’ve ever seen. Although I watched it for the first time in 2019, five years after it came out, I’ve seen it at least 4 times since. It’s on my list of my favorite movies of all time.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS was recommended to me by my aunt and uncle after they moved to New Zealand in 2019. They were telling me about the cultural differences between the United States and their new home, and they mentioned the movie as a great representation of Kiwi humor. I trust their media opinions, and I was not disappointed. The movie is hilarious – it’s written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, and this movie made me realize how big of a fan I am of Taika Waititi’s work.

It’s become my go-to to show to friends and family when there’s an opportunity for a movie night. It came out during the TWILIGHT hype of the early 2010s, but its jokes don’t feel stale in 2021 – there are so many quotable lines, and I pick up on additional jokes on every viewing. The cast works so well together, too. Watching it, you can somewhat pick up on the improvisational comedy – apparently over 125 hours of footage were filmed for the 90-minute movie.

And of course, Stu, the human software analyst who’s one of the most lovable movie characters to ever exist.

If you’re looking for a fun Halloween-ish movie, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS should move to the top of your list. It’s not too scary, but it does have some generous blood – I mean these are vampires we’re talking about. WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS is available to rent wherever you stream your movies.
