WICKED: FOR GOOD is absolutely perfect. This is part two of the immense WICKED saga, which added the necessary depth and details to allow the Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) story arcs to blossom in all their brilliant, colorful glory. The over two-hour film flew by, showcasing its extraordinary sets, costumes, singing, production numbers, and well-placed, humorous, and intentional dramatic moments. It didn’t matter if the plot was familiar or new. It breathed life into the original printed pages by L. Frank Baum and left an indelible imprint to be cherished forever.
Yes, I am aware that most film critics would differ with me. I have done my research, but I am standing with the public on this one. I loved it. I do agree it was darker and more intense at times, but that was the dirty, cruel secret behind the many shades of Oz’s green walls. It was not a nice place to live, especially if you were considered ‘different.’ Oz was being led astray by those in power, and, as we all know too well from today’s political scene, it is not easy to stand up for what is right.
Grande and Erivo were exceptional in their portrayals as Elphaba and Glinda. They left room for those insightful breaths and beats necessary to follow their maturity and growth. I was swept away by their friendship and love for each other. Their moments together and apart laid the foundation for their angst and yearnings. It was palatable. It crescendoed to the musical number FOR GOOD. I am betting there wasn’t a dry eye in the theater, including mine. They are both extraordinary with voices that could tame the savage beast in anyone.
The director, Jon M. Chu, was a fearless, bold leader who shared these fabulous results not only from the actors but from his entire creative team. Every second was a visionary delight that entwined treasured memories from THE WIZARD OF OZ. Everything clicked into place, guiding it all full circle. Chu is a creative genius. No doubt about that.
The supporting ensemble was fabulous as well. What woman or man could resist the irresistible Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), the villainous Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), The Wonderful Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), Boq (Ethan Slater), and Nessa (Marissa Bode)? Stellar performances by all.
I was lucky to have seen the original cast of WICKED on Broadway, which included Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, and Joel Grey. It was truly an unforgettable experience to witness the talent and finesse of these iconic stars. I have been a theatre arts teacher for over 35 years. I directed THE WIZARD OF OZ as my final production before I retired. I know this story well, and I can honestly and unequivocally say… see WICKED: FOR GOOD. It was magical. Give yourself this goose-bumpy gift. “Oz is more than a name.” It is “happiness and where dreams can come true.”
WICKED: FOR GOOD is now playing in theaters everywhere.
