WEDNESDAY maintained its goulash story throughout its final four episodes. Although I have usually enjoyed her spirit-filled world, this time it felt like overkill with far too many subplots to follow throughout Nevermore Academyโs hallowed halls, cemetery, forests, and spooky towers. Why did the writers have to make it all so complicated?ย
Jenna Ortega was fabulous as ever, encapsulating WEDNESDAY. She personified every nuanced look of emotionless expression. Her breakout dance moves (thank you, Lady Gaga) were a delight, but not quite as strong as in season one. She was surrounded by an ensemble of incredible talent portraying fabulous characters, including Enid, Agnes, Thing, her Spirit Guide, the Principal, her Grandmother, and the Siren. All of them moved the story forward with humorous, lightning speed. Yes, audiences did learn a ton of backstory about the Adamsโ history, but wow โ it was overwhelming at times, dealing with a dozen additional characters, including WEDNESDAYโs immediate family (Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, and Uncle Fester). Murder and mayhem made it extremely difficult to โKeep calm and Outcast on.โ
I felt like I was cheated a little during these final four episodes. I wanted more of WEDNESDAY. She is the draw for tuning in. I am fascinated by her demeanor during moments of life or death. She cracks me up. She makes me smile. She is what keeps me coming back. She got a little lost among the crowd.
WEDNESDAY ended with an intentional, clever cliffhanger. I have no doubt there will be a season three, but I hope that the writers will leave the family and fellow former classmates far behind.
It is streaming on Netflix.ย
