WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES is must-see TV. It is hard to watch, but oh so necessary to be reminded of a cruel and inhumane time in history. “We can never forget.” It is based on George Hunter’s novel and inspired by a true story.
The story follows a large Jewish family starting just before Germany invades Poland. It shares their heartbreaking journey throughout World War II. It is horrific and terrifying. The fear of each member of the family is palatable. It punched a hole in my gut as I watched the first four episodes. Each family member had different experiences from this period and across their miles of separation. The brilliance of the writing, the creativity of the ensemble’s masterful acting, the lighting, the sets, and the haunting music are outstanding. The audience will feel every morsel of pain and fleeting joy. My heart was shredded knowing their Polish family could have been my own. Their determination to survive is a testament to the human spirit. Their perseverance to reunite one day is love in its purest form.
I cannot say enough about WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES. It is bold and daring to bring to light what families felt during these dark days for all to experience. I know it will not be easy to watch, but any war is beyond our civil imagination. Our society must not be “blind” again to what evil lurks within humanity. It is streaming on Hulu.
